Dear Brothers and Sisters

I believe that there is a deep desire in all of us to want to make the world a better place. Many of us are doing what we can to bring about a world of love, peace, justice, equality and harmony – harmony not just among human beings but also with nature. Our world – wounded by suffering, marginalisation, oppression, violence, torture and imprisonment, war, deprivation of freedom and dignity, trafficking and slavery, abject poverty, forced migration and destruction of the environment – needs healing. And thus our Theme for this year

HEAL OUR WORLD – “make it a better place”

This theme invites all of us in this diocese to continuously find ways and means to heal our world. Drawing from the mission of Christ in which He expresses very clearly in Luke 4:18-19, “The spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of
the Lord’s favour” we are empowered to be healers just as Christ is, for His mission is our mission. The Spirit of the Lord is upon each and every one of us to bring the good news to all – to heal our world. Our Lenten Campaign will focus on the following dimensions of bringing healing to our world. (These are also part of the social teachings of the Church):

a) Uphold Human Dignity
b) Love Our Families
c) Embrace the Poor
d) Save the Environment
e) Promote Social Justice

To help us fulfil or achieve these objectives, the Lenten Campaign Team has prepared various programmes with activities that can be carried out in your parishes, BECs, organisations, families and individually as well. These will be presented to you by your Parish Lenten Campaign coordinators. You can also download our Lenten Campaign Booklet, which contains a summary of all activities, guidelines and resources for the campaign from our website: and visit our Facebook page: Penang Diocese Lenten Campaign ( for updates.

As in previous years, the Lenten Campaign endeavours to raise funds for the poor and marginalised. I am very grateful to you for all your contributions over the years. The money collected has been used to support organisations, homes, centres and individuals who are in need.
As disciples of hope, let us Heal Our World and make it a better place.
